A successful digital leader also must bear in mind that while technology is important, the people part of transformation is just as crucial. It’s obvious that leadership today is a balancing act and requires a unique set of skills to drive success that reaps rewards for the leader, organization, and workforce.

According to Deloitte [1], 42% of major companies now believe that it is very important to invest in developing leaders. Success in the digital age depends upon it. The innovation is the key for leaders to keep abreast of developments in the digital sphere and ensure the workforce is embedded in a culture that values innovation and takes risks to trial new platforms and technologies. Innovation is impossible without risk. If you can’t take risks, you may not be cut out to be a digital leader.

Digital leaders must communicate their vision from the top of an organization right to the bottom. To do this, the leadership must have a communications strategy and understand who they are addressing. While staying on-point and being timely with their delivery, leaders must also give enough information to make people care about and invest in their message. The ability to convince people to follow you down the yellow brick road isn’t easy, but if you have the vision and can creatively weave a vivid picture that makes people believe what you believe, then the chance of success is significantly greater.

According to George V. Hulme [2] (studying 900 IT executives across nine countries), 72% of respondents said their companies have a responsibility to help solve social challenges in addition to the pursuit of profits and 74% said it is important that business goals and social goals are aligned. Furthermore, 70% of respondents believe their business leaders practice emphatic leadership and most management teams actively communicate with their employees. And 68% said their management readily communicates important information, and their ideas, to their employees. Empowering the employees to achieve work-life balance was believed to be important to 78% of respondents. Additionally, 74% agreed diversity is important, 72% for inclusion and 71% said they encourage their employees to act proactively.

Many companies adopt digital technologies motivate with the mission statements: to connect, power, and improve their businesses, but until their own employees feels part of the vision, this will be hard work to do. The previous table shared by Survey Monkey highlight how digital strategies increase the worker motivation, team work and career opportunities. This also came on top when it aligned social and revenue goals. When survey respondents expressed what factors would improve their trust in enterprises, 67% said they would trust companies that make a positive societal impact and more enterprises indicated they’re embracing social responsibility as well as revenue.
